When a boy loves a girl - Craig Gardner

When a boy loves a girl

They met under the archway;
At the university by the stairs.
She smiled at me so gracefully,
The wasted youth passing us by.
An angel with white hair
So fashionable attired.
She took my heart in her hand
And flashed me another smile.
Two hearts beating as one. Beating together in time.

Evenings spent in bed; her hand always in mine.
The small cove for her thumb
A secret of yours and mine.
Of Marilyn Monroe, and ghosts and ghouls;
The Rocky Horror picture show.
Stories that the reaper sows,
Keep us entertained all night.
Two hearts beating as one. Beating together in time.

Eating our dinners in great halls,
Made of concrete, stone and pine.
The paintings by her hand
Its walls enshrine.
Arguing blissfully, our friends always close by,
About the lessons, the troubles
And the stories of our time.
Two hearts beating as one. Beating together in time.

The photographer, the sculptor,
A Duchess cloaked in fire.
In galleries of art we play.
Her eyes soft and kind.
An apprentice paints a picture
About the death of a mime.
And Romeo and Juliet hanging sculptures on the wall;
In the hours of the midnight light
The drunk man screams out his calls.
She kisses me on the cheek and whispers in my ear;
Stories of love and soft romance
And what the future holds in store.
Two hearts beating as one. Beating together in time.

Conversations on politics and strange needless wars.
Apparitions of women in tears;
Their bodies battered and torn.
Of Picasso and the soup cans;
The stories the Mayfairs told.
In little rooms and passage ways,
We play and run at morn.
Hiding from the housekeepers
That we so playfully scorn.
Two hearts beating as one. Beating together in time.

To the crossroads our paths did come.
Which direction shall we go?
One leading to happiness;
The others we don’t know.
The paths unseen; those ends unknown.
The directions we might go
All leading to the same little house;
And the place we can call our home.
Two hearts beating as one. Beating together in time.
